Abstract

In this report, I make a comparative analysis of how the directors of three Brazilian independent films made in the past decade connect the setting of their narratives in regards to the arc of their young protagonists to establish allegories related to the region they show. All the films are of the coming-of-age genre and are centered on female characters. I describe and argue how specific scenes and elements of each film represent aspects of liminality, pollution and representation concerning space. My analysis is grounded on theories regarding liminality, binary oppositions and landscape allegory.
