  • Marianne Ostrat

     

    Marianne Ostrat, a Tallinn-based Estonian film producer and founder of Alexandra Film and Fork Film Animation Studio, is active in the field of fiction, documentary and animation. In 2009 she graduated from the Baltic Film and Media School international Film Arts MA program and in 2013 from the EAVE European Producers Workshop. Her debut fiction feature The End of the Chain premiered at the Karlovy Vary IFF in 2017 and garnered four nominations at Estonian Film & TV Awards. Marianne co-produced a Spanish-Estonian feature documentary Constructing Albert (2017, San Sebastian, HotDocs, SXSW, Palm Springs) and a Swedish-Estonian animated short Amalimbo (2016), that premiered at the Venice IFF and was nominated for a European Film Award. In July 2021 Marianne released her second fiction feature - a youth comedy Kids of the Night. Marianne is a member and former board member of the Estonian Film Industry Cluster and with her upcoming feature documentary - an Estonian-French-Icelandic co-production Smoke Sauna Sisterhood - is a Sundance Institute Documentary Program Grantee.

    Elen Lotman

     

    Elen Lotman is a cinematographer, lecturer and researcher. She has shot numerous documentaries, short and feature films. For various film projects she has travelled to Japan, Tibet, China, Thailand, India, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Lapland and Russian Arctic. Her films have won awards and have been shown in competition programs of A-class film festivals like IDFA, Tampere Film Festival, Black Nights Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival etc. In addition to being a cinematographer she has served as Head of Film Department in Baltic Film and Media school. During her PhD studies she conducted neurocinematic research on how cinematography affects viewer's empathy towards the onscreen characters and she currently serves in BFM as the head of creative research track. Recently, films she has shot have won numerous awards and accolades. Full-length documentary 'Dear Mother' was in Official selection of Tampere Film Festival National Competition Programme and was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Reel Heart Filmfestival in Toronto, won the Best Feature Documentary at the Reel Heart Filmfestival in Toronto, Estonian People´s Award at Pärnu Film Festival, LOOK AT ME Award at the 39th Oulu International Children and Youth Film Festival and special mention in the Taormina film festival. Full-length fiction 'Good Bye Soviet Union' won the Black Nights Film Festival audience award, Best Screenplay in Estonian Film and TV Awards and was selected to multiple competition programmes, among others A-list festivals Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and Moscow International Film Festival. Full-length fiction Sleeping Beast won the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival Just Film Works in Progress award. Her feature film screenplay 'Container' made it to quarterfinalist in a historically tight competition of 8191 submitted scripts at the American Film Academy Nicholl Fellowship international screenwriting competition. Her virtual exhibitions filmed for Tallinn Art Hall were chosen among best virtual exhibitions of 2020 by both New York Times and Wallpaper Magazine.

    She also serves as co-president of IMAGO, International Federation of Cinematographers, an organization that unites 5000+ cinematographers from all over the world.

    Harmo Kallaste

     

    Born in 1972, Harmo has been working as a sound designer and re-recording mixer for more than 20 years. His list of credits include more than one hundred projects, starting from domestic TV programs and shorts up to nominated feature films and documentaries. His filmography also includes the Estonian film "Tangerines" which was nominated as the "Best Foreign Language" film in both the Golden Globe and Academy Awards in 2015 and the film "Putting Lipstick on a Pig" which won the best documentary award in Warsaw International Film Festival in 2018. Harmo has also been working as a music producer and musician and has composed for commercials, audio-visuals, TV and film.

    Mart Raun

     

    Cinematographer, visiting lecturer, screenwriter and illustrator Mart Raun studied directing and cinematography in Tallinn university Baltic Film and Media School. From 2005 he started working as illustrator and freelance storyboard artist for local and international commercials. He also did storyboards for feature films "Georg" (2007) (2007) and "Kill The Child" (2022) (2022).

    As a big film lover, he started writing reviews for online space in 2012 and also worked as a weekly film critic for "Äripäev", one of the most successful economic newspapers in Europe.

    After graduating from film school he worked for a few years as a Camera Assistant and gaffer/electrician before becoming a full time cinematographer. He has been shooting commercials, TV, fiction and documentaries. Feature Films as cinematographer: "Cormorans" (2011) and "Kids of The Night" (2021), where he also shares co-writing credit.

    Since 2015 he has been working in Tallinn university with international programs. Besides KinoEyes he was also course director and teacher of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programme "Viewfinder". Currently he is also the head and visiting lecturer of Audiovisual Media BA program at BFM.

    Liis Nimik

     

    Liis Nimik is a documentary filmmaker, fiction editor, lecturer and an editing philosopher. She graduated from Baltic Film and Media School - BA in Film Art in 2012 as an editor and MA in 2015 as a documentary filmmaker. Liis has been an active member of the filmmaking community in Estonia and abroad since 2010. She has edited 4 feature films and worked together with the renowned director Veiko Õunpuu in two feature films - "Free Range" (2013) and "Roukli" (2015). She has also edited the widely distributed festival hit "In the Crosswind" (2014), being also one of the authors of the original idea. Liis Nimik is currently producing documentaries and finishing her first feature doc as a director. The recent films she produced - "Lembri Uudu" (2017), "The Weight of All the Beauty" (2019) and "A Loss of Something Ever Felt" (2020) have all been international festival successes, having being premiered, shown and awarded in festivals like DocLeipzig, Sarajevo, HotDocs, Melbourne IFF, Jihlava and Black Nights. "The Weight of all the Beauty" participated in the Oscar competition for short docs in 2021. Liis believes curiosity and humor are the two most important components of life and keeps researching the magic of film through this perspective.

    Jarmo Valkola

     

    Jarmo Valkola is Doctor of Philosophy. His dissertation is from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, Department of Art Education, entitled Perceiving the Visual in Cinema; Semantic Approaches to Film Form and Meaning (1993). http://urn.fi/URN:ISBN:978-951-39-7891-4 His opponent was Professor Raymond Durgnat, University of East-London. He has lifetime nominations as Docent at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland (Motion Pictures, TV and Production Design), Docent Professor at the University of Lapland, Finland (Media Science), and Docent at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland (Art Education). During the last 15 years, he has worked as Professor (Innove, film theory), Associate Professor of Film History and Theory, and visiting academic supervisor of thesis-work at Baltic Film, Media, Art and Communication Institute of Tallinn University, Estonia. Previously he has worked as Professor of Art Education at the University of Jyväskylä, as Associate Professor of Media Education at the University of Lapland, and as Invited Professor at Sorbonne-Nouvelle University's Doctoral School - Chaire Roger Odin: Cinéma et audiovisuel, Paris 3 - (2014). He has made numerous visiting professor visits to Aegean Sea University, University of Vienna, University of Padova, Pécs University, University of Debrecen, Famu, the Prague Film School, RITS Film School/Erasmus University of Brussels, Kadir Has University, Istanbul, East-London University, University of Warsaw, University of Groningen, Tartu University, Academy of Performing Arts, Bratislava, Constantine, the Philosopher University in Nitra, and Université de Caen/Basse Normandie. He acted as Special Researcher in the Cult, Community and Identity Research Project, Academy of Finland, Department of Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä, 2006-8. He has written 18 books and 60 scientific articles on cinema, art, and aesthetics. His books and articles have appeared in various languages: Finnish, English, French, Italian, German, Turkish, Greek, Estonian and Hungarian.     Kaur Kokk

     

    Kaur Kokk (born 1987) is an Estonian director-screenwriter. He has both a BA and MA degree in feature-film directing, both from the Baltic Film and Media School in Tallinn. He is the author of numerous award-winning short films, most notably "Olga", which received Special Jury Mention in Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in 2014. His debut feature-length film "The Riddle of Jaan Niemand'' premiered in 2018.

    Besides directing and writing for his own projects, he has worked as a freelance script editor, lecturer and documentary editor in recent years.

    Julia Idlis

     

    Julia Idlis is a Tallinn-based screenwriter, writer/poet, and narrative designer. Originally from Moscow, Russia, she moved to live and work in Estonia in 2018 and soon joined the Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communications School as a screenwriting teacher for the Kino Eyes program. Julia has a Ph.D. in philology from the Moscow University for her comprehensive analysis of the screenplays written by the British playwright and Nobel prize winner Harold Pinter. She has taught screenwriting and storytelling in Russia, Czech Republic, Estonia, and other countries.

    Julia combines teaching with active work in both film and video game industry. As a screenwriter, she wrote two feature films and several TV shows. One of her TV shows called Fartsa was among the first Russian TV shows to be bought and shown by Netflix. As a narrative designer she took part in developing a wide range of video games including The X-Files: Deep State, a mobile game based on the popular American TV show and licensed by 20th Century Studios, USA.

    As a writer/poet, Julia published several collections of poems and a non-fiction book on the origins and formative years of the Russian blogs and social networks (Runet: The Idols We Created). Her poems have been translated into English, Spanish, German, and other languages and won a number of literary awards. She is currently working on a series of sci-fi novels, the first book to be published in 2022.

    Tarmo Rajaleid

     

    Tarmo Rajaleid has a Master degree in Film Editing and teaches editing and film production workflows courses in Tallinn University Baltic Film, Media and Arts School where he also works as a Technical Director. He also has the Apple Certified Trainer qualification.

  • James Mavor

    James Mavor leads the Kino Eyes European Fiction Masters programme at Edinburgh Napier University. He developed and led the successful MA Screenwriting from 2007-2020 and also now leads the MFA Advanced Film Practice programme which helped nurture the talents of Ben Sharrock and Irune Gurtubai, the team behind the Bafta-winning Limbo (2021). Kino Eyes graduate Bjorn Hanson moved on to the MFA and is now working successfully as a Producer in Scotland.

    James combines teaching with his work as a professional screenwriter. Since joining Screen Academy Scotland in 2007, James has been involved in a number of collaborations with Ian Rankin, including Reichenbach Falls (2007) and Doors Open (2012) for ITV produced by and starring Stephen Fry. His credits for television span 30 years across soaps, series and single dramas, including Take the High Road, Doctor Finlay, Monarch of the Glen and Split Second, starring Clive Owen and Helen McCrory. Current work in development includes two TV projects in development with Compact Pictures and Screen Scotland, and a feature film.

    Kate Swan

    Kate Swan is a visiting tutor at Edinburgh Napier University.

    She produced the internationally acclaimed Scottish feature films PLAY ME SOMETHING directed by John Berger and Timothy Neat, starring Tilda Swinton, Margaret Tait’s BLUE BLACK PERMANENT and the documentary feature film KISS THE WATER directed by Eric Steel with animation by Em Cooper.

    She has produced popular television dramas for BBC including SPLIT SECOND, written by James Mavor and starring Clive Owen and Helen McCrory and THE BLUE BOY starring Emma Thompson and Adrian Dunbar.

    She is a former Director of the Scottish Film Production Fund where she initiated the multi award-winning Tartan Shorts film strand, and a development slate that led to SHALLOW GRAVE (Danny Boyle) CARLA’S SONG (Ken Loach) and SMALL FACES (Gillies Mackinnon) She developed single television drama for BBC Scotland for over a decade working with a wide range of talents, including Ashley Pharoah and Andrew Kötting.

    Kate is currently developing feature films by writers Evan Placey and Alexander McCall Smith, with the support of the British Film Institute and Screen Scotland. She is a former member of the BFI Production Board and is a member of ACE, the European producer’s network.

    Carolynne Sinclair Kidd

    Carolynne Sinclair Kidd heads up new comedy venture CHANNEL X HOPSCOTCH with partners Alan Marke and Jim Reid from Channel X, and has a biography firmly rooted in comedy. She was one of the producers on the darkly comedic Irvine Welsh penned feature for Film4 THE ACID HOUSE, and went on to produce three series of comedy for STV including HIGH TIMES which was nominated for the Golden Rose of Montreux and won a Scottish BAFTA and Celtic Media Award for best scripted. Supporting new and emerging talent via her role as Executive Producer at the Scottish Film Talent Network she guided many short films to international festival success, annually having films play at festivals such as Sundance, Venice and Berlin, and kickstarting the careers of many writers, directors and producers. This culminated in the release of the BBC Films funded feature LIMBO, which was developed by the SFTN, and played to both critical and audience acclaim. Carolynne has produced two one hour comedy horrors for BBC Scotland written and directed by Still Game’s Greg Hemphill, as well as a short comedy starring Frankie Boyle, and most recently produced a series of monologues on the theme of poverty for BBC 4 SKINT written and directed by UK-wide talent with lived experience of the issue. She produced the 2022 Channel 4 comedy Blap UNFAIR.

    Louise Milne

    Louise Milne is a visual anthropologist, a film-maker and a leading scholar in the history of dreams.

    Originally from Lewis, she has been working and teaching in Edinburgh since the mid-1990s, playing an instrumental role in the development of various undergraduate and graduate programmes both at Edinburgh College of Art and at Edinburgh Napier University. Since 2015, she is Associate Professor of Film.

    Her main scholarly contribution is Carnivals & Dreams. Pieter Bruegel and the History of the Imagination, a comprehensive study on the 17th century Flemish Renaissance artist, the first edition of which was funded by Leverhulme. A second edition, currently in its final revision stage, has obtained financial support from the Carnegie and Scouloudi trusts.

    Alongside her academic work, Louise is an accomplished film-maker. Her first independent film, The Druids: Travels in Deep England, was supported by the BFI and Channel 4. Subsequently, her films have been chosen for screening at national and international festivals, such as the Alchemy Film Festival in Scotland and, most recently, the Main Film Festival, which Louise attended as an invited special guest in 2017.

    In the last few years, she has been short-listed for an RAI prize, and appointed to the board of the International Association of Comparative Mythology, as editor of the Journal of Comparative Mythology, chief editor of Cosmos, and President of the Traditional Cosmology Society.

    Louise is also a founder member of the Maths Meets Myth research network group. She has represented the University at public events and festivals, and also appeared as a BBC broadcaster.

    Morag McKinnon

    Morag studied Film and TV at Edinburgh College of Art graduating with a BA 1st class honours, followed by an MSc from Napier University. She directed a number of short films through various schemes including Home for Channel 4 which won the BAFTA for Best Short Film and a number of international awards. She went on to direct television drama including Buried – as one of two directors, which won the BAFTA for Best TV series. Morag went on to direct the feature Donkeys which won a Scottish BAFTA for best film and collaborated on the documentary I Am Breathing with Emma Davie, which won a Scottish BAFTA award. Most recently Morag filmed the award winning play The List starring Maureen Beattie for Stellar Quines theatre company. Morag teaches part time at Edinburgh College of Art and is developing her next feature - an adaptation of the novel Venus as a boy.

    Mark Jenkins

    Mark is an award winning film editor and a filmmaker in both the arts and commercial sector. He has extensive experience in film and events programming. He also delivers film education and training. His recent work includes many aspects of working on cultural heritage and arts projects through research, development, training, production, exhibitions and events.

    He is currently chair and main programmer for West Side Cinema and a trustee of Regional Screen Scotland, a national organisation providing advice and information on setting up local screen facilities and running Scotland’s mobile cinema – Screen Machine.

    Mark was born in London, moved to Chester, and steadily made his way north via Edinburgh and Fife, before moving to Orkney with his wife Rebecca Marr.

    Minttu Mantynen

    Shooting both drama and documentary since 2002.

    Broadcast credits include BBC, STV, YLE and PBS. Very happy to travel. UK and EU passports.

    Cinematography credits include the award winning shorts Milk (Golden Bear), Cotopaxi (Silver Bear), Stuck (Silver Hugo), How to Save a Fish from Drowning and Ahora, No (Scottish Baftas).

    Nigel Smith

    Nigel is current on staff at Edinburgh Napier University/Screen Academy Scotland, where he lectures across the MA Screenwriting, MA Screen Project Development, MA Film (Producing), PGCert Screenwriting and BA Television programmes. Since the late 1990s Nigel has worked in both public and private sectors variously as Producer, Series Producer, Executive Producer, Development Executive, Script Editor, Script Reader/Analyst and Screenwriter, allowing him knowledge of a wide variety of screen narrative development practices across a range of film and television genres and perspective on the varied activities of project producers and screenwriters.

    He has experience of story and screenplay writing and development practices abroad- in the story department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists, and as a freelance script consultant for Senator Film Produktion & Verleih and Majestic Filmverleih in Germany, most recently (2013) working with Oscar-winning writer/director Florian Gallenberger on an English language polish of feature thriller screenplay ‘Colonia Dignidad’ for the US market.

  • Barry Dignam

    Barry Dignam is Programme Chair of Film & Television at the Irish National Film School at IADT. He was the Irish Course Director of Viewfinder, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master of Art in Cinematography. As an educator, he has over twenty years’ experience in teaching, academic strategy and quality assurance.

    He studied Drama at Trinity College Dublin and Film at the National Film School IADT.

    As a filmmaker, He has made many multi-award-winning shorts including 'Chicken', 'Dream Kitchen' and 'A Ferret Called Mickey'. He's had been nominated for a Palme d'Or at Cannes and a Berlin Bear. 'Monged' a feature he co-wrote with Gary Duggan premiered in 2015. His films have been presented in official selection at over a hundred and fifty international film festivals. They have been screened by top broadcasters including Film Four, PBS, Canal+ and been released on DVD and theatrically in Europe, the US and beyond.

    Deirdre O’Toole

    Deirdre O’Toole is a lecturer in the National Film School of Ireland, IADT. She lectures on the BA (Hons) Film and Television Production, BA (Hons) New Media Studies and the Erasmus+ MA Cinematography. Deirdre has a practice-based PhD in Film and Visual Studies from Queen's University Belfast, where she made documentaries collaborating with storytellers who had experienced trauma.

    Deirdre is also a filmmaker who has worked for many years as a cinematographer where she filmed documentaries, music videos and dramas. Deirdre has directed three documentaries which have been shown extensively in film festivals and galleries around the world including Chagrin Documentary Festival, Ohio, Red Rock Film Festival, Utah, Docs Ireland, Belfast, Aspen Mountain Film Festival, Colorado, On Art Film Festival, Poland, Kinosmena Festival, Minsk, Irish Film Institute Documentary Festival, and Europa Documentary Festival, Egypt. Her work was showcased for four months in the Turchin Centre for the Arts, North Carolina in 2019, twice in the Saranac Gallery in Washington and twice in CIACLA, USA.

    Jean Rice

    Jean has been a stalwart member of the academic staff in Film & TV for over twenty years, and brings an exemplary track record in creative production industry experience, and works tirelessly to maintain rich and rewarding industry connections for the benefit of the student body. She has nurtured and advocated for students and graduates alike and is dedicated in her promotion of student creativity and craft excellence. Among the many brilliant initiatives Jean has spearheaded in her time, is the award-winning Young Women in Film & TV, a series of annual workshops which focus on visual storytelling and was designed to inspire young women to consider a career in the film and television industry, delivered by all female teams of industry professionals. Jean believes passionately that the future of film & television must be based on diversity, inclusion and gender parity.

    Lance Hogan

    Lance Hogan has been a producer, musician and composer for the past 30 years. After graduating from film college, he toured the world many times over.

    His time on the road gave him an enviable knowledge of world music working with artists including Dead Can Dance, Sinead O'Connor, Kodo Drummers, Ronnie Wood, Babba Maal, Zakir Hussain, U2 & Kila.

    Lance is now concentrating on his first love: composing for film. He has scored features from Finland, Hungary, Turkey, Italy, UK and Ireland, working with directors including Oscar-winner Neil Jordan, Oscar-nominated animator Jimmy Murakami, and music video legend, Kevin Godley (10cc).

    Paul Freaney

    Paul Freaney lectures in Film Studies and Screenwriting at the National Film School, at IADT. He originally designed and launched the institutes’ Masters in Screenwriting and is the Programme Chair of that programme. It has been running now for twenty years and has built a reputation as one of the finest courses of its kind in Europe.

    In 2014 he wrote and directed the short film drama - "These Dog Days". It Premiered at the Indie Cork Film Festival and played the Cork Film Festival in 2015. He has developed a number of feature scripts with directors, producers and recently developed a feature "I'm A Wheel" with a Screen Ireland development loan. His most recent screenplay is a contemporary drama entitled "It's Like This". He is on the Board of Directors of the Guestbook Project Foundation, founded by Professor Richard Kearney of Boston College; the foundation promotes peace building in divided Communities through shared storytelling. He is also a member of the Emmy awards screenwriting-judging panel.

    Steve O’Reilly

    Steve has over twenty years professional experience in Ireland and internationally in the film and television industry. He has worked on productions for many international clients including the BBC, National Geographic, Artė, CBS 60 mins, and Netflix. Steve has worked all over the world including extreme environments such as Antarctica the Himalayas and transatlantic yacht racing.

    His list of credits include TV and film commercials, film shorts, documentaries and TV programmes, and include two international award winning feature film documentaries ‘The Summit’ 2014 and 'In A House That Ceased To Be' 2015.

    Rónán Ó Muirthile

    Rónán Ó Muirthile is the Head of Department for Film & Media and Head of the National Film School at IADT in Dún Laoghaire. The department has a student cohort of over 500 full time and part time students studying all aspects of the screen and media industries. He is responsible for all aspects of academic delivery, quality assurance, budgeting, administration and strategic development. He is an active practitioner. His credits include all genres of TV; high end, award winning documentary films, international formats and some of the best-known and loved Irish prime time programmes. The documentary 'Flann O'Brien: The Lives of Brian' which he wrote & produced was awarded the IFTA for best single documentary in 2007 and 'Connected', a twenty part series he series produced, won the IFTA for best Constructed Reality in 2015..

  • António Afonso Costa

    Master in Film Studies since 2014 and currently PhD researcher. Tony Costa is both a professional cinematographer and a teacher at Lusofona University where he is the head of the cinematography department. He was born in Hamilton-Ontario, Canada in 1962 born from Portuguese emigrant parents whom have decided to return to Portugal in 1970’s. He was back to Canada in the 1980’s where he began taking a few professional courses in the camera department while was working in the Medallion Film Labs in Toronto. He began as an assistant camera in music videos in Toronto just before returning to Portugal where he pursued a career as an assistant camera up to being a cinematographer. His first feature as cinematographer was called «Sem Ela» in 2011. Since 2004 he has been teaching in The Lusofona University in Lisbon by maintaining his professional assignments as cinematographer. He is one of the founders of the Portuguese Academy of cinema and of the Portuguese Society of Cinematographers where he keeps a seat in the board of directories. Tony was vise-president of IMAGO (The European Federation of Cinematographers) and currently he is the editor of the imago website.

    Célia Quico

    Célia Quico is a professor and researcher at Universidade Lusófona in Portugal, currently involved in the projects a) ResponSEAble - “Protecting the ocean: our collective responsibility, our common interest.

    Supporting the development of cost-effective ocean literacy in Europe” (2015-2018), financed by Horizon 2020 and b) “Innova Museum - Museums comes back to the locals through art and food” (2016-2018), financed by Creative Europe. Celia previously worked for the cable and DTH operator ZON Multimédia as a project manager of digital interactive television and multimedia. Also, Célia worked as consultant for the social responsibility project “PT Escolas” for Portugal Telecom, which promoted digital literacy among Portuguese young people. In 2008, she obtained her PhD in Communication Sciences by Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with a thesis about young people in Portugal and their usage of media, internet and mobile.

    David Novack

    David Novack is a filmmaker, a sound engineer and sound designer.

    He holds a degree in music from Berklee College of Music and an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania, in which he also has been teaching for several years in its School of Design.

    As a sound designer and re-recording mixer, D. Novack’s work includes dozens of projects and major awards for documentary and fiction film productions, including Todd Haynes’ Velvet Goldmine, Living Out Loud, Last Days of Disco, Kids, Safe and The Corporation. He also designed, scored, notated and mixed theatrical and album sound effects for Roger Waters’ opera, Ça Ira.

    As a filmmaker he directed, wrote and produced Finding Babel (a cross-genre documentary and art film on the life and work of Russian writer Isaac Babel) and Burning the Future: Coal in America (PBS, Sundance Channel, US State Department’s American Documentary Showcase), which won the prestigious IDA Pare Lorentz Award and the British Clarion Award, both for social documentary filmmaking. He also produced Kimjongilia, featuring the testimony of N. Korean refugees, which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and won the 2010 human rights documentary award from the One World Brussels Film Fest of the Human Rights and Democracy Network.

    Inês Gil

    Inês Gil is an Associate Professor at ECATI (School of Communication, Arts and Information Technology) at Lusófona University since 2007, where she has taught film and photography since 2000. She was coordinator of the Lisbon Photography Archive of the Portuguese Photography Center between 1998 and 2001.

    After completing a specialized training in conservation and restoration of photography and film at the IFROA (Institut Français and Restauration des Oeuvres d¿Art in Paris) between 1989 and 1994, she completed her PhD in Film at the Paris 8 University in 2002, with a thesis on the Atmosphere in Cinema published by Gulbenkian Editions in 2005; Finished a postdoctoral fellowship in 2010, with an FCT scholarship, on film skating and its use in contemporary experimental films. She completed a 2nd post-doc on Contemporary Cinema and Time at the Catholic University of Lisbon in 2015. She is the director of documentaries and installations in vidéoarte.

    Hedisson Mota

    Professor at Lusófona University of Humanities and Technologies lecturing music and audio production. Researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology INET-md Univ. of Aveiro) and at CIC Digital/ CICANT (ULHT).

    Holds a licenciate degree in Musical Sciences (NOVA University of Lisbon) and a masters degree in Multimedia Communication (Aberta University). Currently working on his PhD in Acoustics and Music Technology with doctoral research project in the field of audio production (Univ. de Aveiro).

    AVID Certified Instructor (ACI) trained by AVID Europe at Pinewood Studios (London) and Edinburg Napier University (UK).

    As a musician worked with Armindo Neves, Paulo de Carvalho, Carlos do Carmo, Rita Guerra e Carlos Barreto. Grava com os Balla, Sam e Olavo Bilac (Santos e Pecadores), António Mardel (com Rui Veloso) e Pluma. As a composer and sound designer has worked TV content for channels RTP, TVI, Sic Notícias, TVCine, MOV HD, TPA, TMN, CGD, Banco BIG.

    Filipe Vale

    Started as an independent filmmaker and film editor. After graduating from Cinema in Universidade Lusófona and directing a couple a short films started a career as a teacher. Since then teaches editing and film language in Universidade Lusófona and coordinates internal production and external collaborations for film production. Also the work in the school is the main occupation, still edits film, mainly fiction. The curriculum include features, shorts, documentaries, music videos and commercials.

    Gonçalo Galvão Teles

    Gonçalo Galvão Teles graduated from the University of Lisbon with a Law Degree before traveling to the United States to complete the Master’s Program in Screenwriting at the prestigious University of Southern California (USC). Upon returning to Portugal, his first produced screenplay, the animated short “The Suspicion”, went on to win the Cartoon D’Or for Best European Animation of the year 2000.

    Since then, Gonçalo has developed a career as writer, director and producer of more than twenty films and is presently directing his new feature film “Ice”, scheduled for released in the Spring of 2014. He is a full time professor at the film department at Universidade Lusófona.

    João Canijo

    João Canijo is one of the most prominent Portuguese filmmakers and stage directors of his generation. From 1980 to 1985 he worked as an assistant director to Manoel de Oliveira, Wim Wenders, Alain Tanner and Werner Schroeter, among others. Since 1998, João Canijo has a number of films that made him one of the most important Portuguese filmmakers. “In the Darkness of the Night” or “Misbegotten” show his interest in the investigation of Portuguese identity.

    “Blood of My Blood”, one of his last feature film, was applauded by critics and public, and was present in numerous festivals, and was selected as the Portuguese entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards, but it did not make the final shortlist. He has also been working in theatre and television. João Canijo films have been showed in numerous film festivals such as Cannes, Berlin or San Sebastian. João Canijo holds a Master degree in directing from the Lisbon School of Theatre and Film.

    Hedisson Mota

    Composer and music producer for record and television productions. Lecturer at the University of Aveiro and Lusofona University of Humanities and Technology (Lisbon) in the field of audio production. Holds a degree in Musicology (Nova University of Lisbon) and Masters degree in Multimedia Communication (Open University - Lisbon). Currently developing a doctoral research project on record production at the University of Aveiro/ INET-md. Visiting researcher at CICANT (Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies

    Marta Vaz de Sousa

    Lawyer with training in Information Law (Lisboa), Scriptwriting (Lisboa), Marketing & International Distribution (Spain), Film marketing (México), Pitching (Lisboa), Management and legal aspects in cinema production (Athens). I have been working with Portuguese companies in the audiovisual sector since 1998, primarily in production and distribution. I Initially participated in the making of several feature films, contributing in the areas of legal consultanting, development, financing, post-production coordination and European programmes management for different production companies.

    From 2005 to 2008, I was production manager for cinema, TV and advertising, already focusing on distribution and sales. Working both as an inhouse executive and as a freelancer, I have accumulated experience in productions as diverse as features by Manoel de Oliveira (2005), Christophe Honoré (2003) and Ivo Ferreira (1999). Since 2008, collaborations in the distribution process and international sales for feature films, documentaries, tv programmes and telenovelas have seen me represent in festivals and markets such as American Film Market, Asian Film Market, Cannes Film Market, European Film Market, MIPCOM, MIPDOC, MIPTV, RioMarket, Berlinale, Cannes Film Festival, Cineport, Montreal World cinema festival, Rio International Film festival. Collaborations with prodution companies include: Arquipélago Filmes, National Geographic Channel Portugal, Utopia Filmes, Filbox, Clap Filmes, Madragoa Filmes, Semba Comunicação, Samesame, Valentim De Carvalho Multimedia, Bosque Secreto, Utopia Filmes, Rosa Filmes, Atalanta Filmes, Medeia Filmes.

    Manuel José Damásio

    Manuel is a full professor and the head of the film and media art department at Lusófona University. He obtained his tenure in 2011 from Minho University in Portugal and holds a PhD in media studies from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He has worked as a trainer, consultant and producer in the audiovisual industry at a European and international level for more than twenty years and has a strong past experience as head researcher and project manager in several national and European research and development projects.

    Rafael Martins

    Rafael Manuel Patrão Tavares Antunes Martins, is a PhD student of Communication Sciences at Universidade Lusófona, while maintaining is professional activity at the Portuguese Media Group Impresa as Coordinator of New Digital Formats. Has a Bachelor in Cinema, Video and Multimedia Communication from Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, has a Masters Degree in Film Studies from the same University. He attended several Postgraduate Studies and Specialisations in Content Marketing With T Brand Studio at The School of The New York Times, Film Studies at SFZE, Hungary, Collaborative Screenwriting and Transmedia Storytelling at Digital Media Summer Institute, University of Texas / FCSH - UNL, Immersive video storytelling at UC Berkeley, Postgraduate studies in the European Course in Entrepreneurship for the Creative Industries, Postgraduate studies in "Elements of Journalism” at Universidade Lusófona.

    He is an associate professor in the Bachelor of Cinema, Video and Multimedia Communication at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and at the International Masters Kino Eyes. He is an integrated researcher in the CICANT - Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies, and in the project RETHINK-Alternative Narratives For Violent Extremism.

    He directed and produced the Transmedia project "Lápis Azul" on censorship in Portugal: "Lápis Azul won the Sophia Prize of the Portuguese Academy of Cinema, and the prize for the best screenplay at the Portuguese Film Festival Caminhos do Cinema Português. The project “Lápis Azul" was chosen to integrate the project "Visualising Cultures" promoted by Brown University and MIT.

    Rui Cardoso Martins

    Rui Cardoso Martins is a writer, screenwriter and chronicler. He is known for "A Herdade", "Em Câmara Lenta", "Duas Mulheres", "A Espia". He was the co-founder of Produções Fictícias and creator of several drama and comedy tv series.

    Tobias Frühmorgen

    Tobias Frühmorgen is a filmmaker, researcher and film lecturer.

    As a film lecturer, he teaches in Creative Production and European Film Heritage, and project tutoring and thesis supervision at Lusófona University Lisbon (PT) for the European Master Program KinoEyes (PT_UK_EE_IRL) as well as the Master Film Studies and Cinema Bachelors. He also works in exchange programs like Looking China (PT_CN_KOR_RU_HU_BRA) and research programs like Filmterm (EE_FI_DE_PT), future.film.education (DE_HU_PT), C-Accelerate (FI_PT_BEL_EE), Cyanotypes (DK_PT_IRL_AUT_NL_CZ_DE), and FilmEU Research-Innovation-Transfer (EU). Since 2020 he is also part of the curriculum, pedagogy and artistic research development of the European Universities Alliance for Film and Media Arts – FilmEU as well as project supervisor for a yearly pilot and coordinator for the joint research project (PT_BE_IRL_EE) on Artificial Intelligence and GTP-3. From 2021 onwards, he is researching on his artistic based PhD at the Filmuniversity Babelsberg (DE) about “Creative Artificial Intelligence – Writing a screenplay with AI“.

    Tobias is and has been working as a film lecturer at many universities and academies, amongst them the RuhrUni Bochum, MetFilmschool Berlin, Dekra University for Applied Science, Schnitt-Akademie Berlin, and the Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität Munich. For 10 years he has been the leading lecturer of the film department at Athanor Akademie Germany.

    His own works as a director and/or editor include a variety of feature films, short films, television, art and music videos. His film Menschenkörper (2004) was screened at more than 25 festivals worldwide. Among his editing works is the restoration and re-editing for Yilmaz Güney‘s YOL – The Full Version (2017) which premiered at Cannes Film Festival 2017.

    Tobias also works a story analyst for international feature screenplays and is a certified Green Consultant for film productions.
