Abstract

This dissertation examines the problems pertaining to the Bollywood style films to be used by the screenwriter in the development of a social drama. Firstly, the influence of Bollywood in Nepalese films and the portrayal of women in Bollywood and Nepalese mainstream movies are studied. Then Dardenne brothers’ approach to social realism are researched with a detailed study of their recent film Young Ahmed. Afterwards, the knowledge gained is used in the practical examination of writing an original screenplay with a female protagonist. Prior to the screenplay writing, characters are developed and a treatment is written with accompanying comments justifying the choices made. Finally, I draw conclusions on the research and its effectiveness on writing an original script, discussing future developments regarding the screenplay and creation of a transmedia plan.
