Abstract

This thesis analyzes how American film director Gus Van Sant uses cinematic tools to externalize character’s psychology in his 2007 film "Paranoid Park". First, it gives a cinematic context of Gus Van Sant filmography and the experimental films that preceded the case study. Then it presents a theoretical framework in character’s perceptual and mental subjectivity according to texts by Jean Mitry, David Bordwell and Edward Branigan.

Then it analyses several scenes using the described theoretical framework while combining it with additional texts in psychoanalytical theory, embodied cognition and cinematic sound. Finally, it presents a new reading of the film’s content to demonstrate the capacity of subjective cinema in representing the world of the other.
