Abstract

This technical report takes a retrospective look at the making of the short film Spin-Off that was made as part of the Kino Eyes program in between 2016 and 2017. As the director of that short film, I try to answer a question that I have been asking myself for a while, which is what is the place of genre in a director’s workflow?

In order to do so, I will take a detailed look at the whole process, starting with the idea and going all the way until the finished film (or as finished as it is as of writing) trying to pinpoint if genre had any conscious influence on my decision making. In addition to scrutinizing the process, I will also study the genre, its codes and conventions to finally be able to draw the most objective and mathematical evaluation table in order to assess how close the final product is to tech-noir. From that table I will draw some conclusions that will help answer my question and help me as a director in my next project.
