Abstract

In this thesis, I will give an overview of what voice-over technique is, how it has been used in cinema, and how the technique and its use developed over cinematic history. I will follow how Malick used and developed voice-over as one of the unique cinematic elements of his work. In particular, I will devote a section of this thesis to Malick’s use of voice-over in his last film, Knight of Cups (2015), which has barely featured in research. Like many critics, I believe that focusing on the “spectator’s experience” is important to “allow one to focus on reception conditions as well as practices pertaining to film sound and to the voice. To consider the various factors at stake in the production and reception of film sound” (Le Fèvre-Berthelot, 2017).
